Writing Fun!
In literacy we have been reading 'The Other Side of Truth' and are now writing our own story about fleeing our homes because of some kind of disaster such as: a lab explosion or a gang hunting you. We have to be ambitious in our language choices, we must include: relative clauses and subordinate clauses (in different parts of a sentence), adverbs, expanded noun phrases, parenthesis, commas for clarity and prepositional phrases. On the 14th June, we invited some of our parents into class to learn about E safety. During our session, we responded to different scenarios of bad things that could happen to us whilst we are online. We looked at what we could do, what we should do and why we should do it.
For example, If someone you didn't know had sent you a message, what would you do?
a: ignore it and hope that the person would stop texting you.
b: call the police immediately
c: see if anyone from your class/someone you know had texted you the other day and if they didn't block the user.
Hopefully, you chose c.
Afterwards, we did a quiz online asking us questions about what we would do if we were getting cyber bullied, inappropriate messages or if we were getting texts from strangers. Fortunately, the whole class got over 8/10!
Remember that if you are in any of these situations, you should always tell a trusted adult because they will make things better.

Internet Safety Workshop
During our Internet safety session in year 6, we looked at scenarios (with parents), having to think of what we should do,what we could do and what we will do. We worked in groups of fours and some children had their parents come in. Each group chose a person to read out a scenario to the class and the class had to answer the scenario with their own answers. We used the scenarios so that if we ever got stuck in this situation online, we would know what to do. We would use this: if we ever had to help a friend; if we didn't want to do something we had to do; or, if we got a text from somebody you didn't know. Most of the problems were about social media, however one included making sure we protected our computers from viruses and other dangers like that.

Swimming Gala 2016
Setting off at 9 o'clock, we walked through the damp streets of Bexleyheath as a year group. Around quarter past, we arrived at Crook Log Leisure Centure. Splitting up into two lines, the competitors and reserves set off to get changed. Walking past reception, we all took our shoes off before entering the changing rooms. As soon as we were ready, we lined-up to go and sit down. Parents were coming in as they started to tell us about the rules of the gala.
The first race was the three-person relay for boys. As the whistle blew, Josh Crabb sped off but unluckily we came in third place. The front-crawl race was the first time we got first place in the swimming gala: this continued for the next few races.
Phenomenal cheering was coming from the stands by Upland Primary School as they cheered on their peers. At half-time, we were in the lead by just 1 point. Another race was the mixed relay with boys and girls, in which you swim breastroke, front-crawl and backstroke; we came first.
Max Driscoll was in the mixed medley race: he was in first place but, as he didn't know he had to do 2 other lengths, we came in third place.
Given great motivation by Mr Lynch, the 8 children: Josh, Charlie; Maddie, Demi, Talia; Flora, Max and Jason tried their best to win the final race but - however hard they tried - they came in 2nd place.
Overall the class of 2015-16 came in second place by only one point! They may have been disappointed but they still congratulated the winning team which was Crook Log Primary School. Mr Lynch was extremely proud of us as we had tried our very best and been on our best behaviour all morning - a credit to the school. Of course, though, we carried on with our heads held high on the walk back to school.

As part of our Modern Greece topic, Jupiter class have been
learning all about earthquakes and how they happen. As Greece is a country with
fault lines beneath it, earthquakes frequently occur there.
We have learnt many facts about earthquakes, such as:
- How an earthquake occurs
- How much damage they can do
- How they are measured
- What causes them
After we did our research, we wrote news
reports, including eyewitness accounts, about the breaking news of our chosen
earthquake. The audience had to be carefully thought about plus the atmosphere,
language and structure of our news report when we were creating them on the
computer. Once we had been given some feedback from Miss Heath, the news report
was then edited by us and improved before it could be ‘published’. We did our
newspaper report on the Great Kelonian earthquake which happened in the Nidvi
Ionian islands in 1953.
Here is our news report:

10 Downing Street Responds
After writing letters to the Prime Minister about E-Safety Day and what the children of year 6 felt would help improve the Internet, the blog post was shared with Mr Cameron.
We received a response thanking us for our letters and ideas.

Retrieve and record information from a non-fiction
In studying the poem, The Highwyaman, we discussed how we would research famous Highwyaman.
We came up with lots of different ideas of how we could find this information, e.g. In a non-fiction book.
Search engines were the Internet service that we chose for this purpose. We under tasting that using the Internet the information from a website is transferred to our screens. Using iPads meant that we were using wifi to connect to the Internet.
We discussed the reliability of the websites that we used, discussing how to also stay safe. We also continued to think about how search results are ranked and selected. For example, the top results may suggest that lots of people have visited it.
Finally, we thought about who owns the information. We decided that copying isn't fair or showing off all our hard work. To make sure we were acting fairly, we wrote the sources of information that we found online.

Using Search Engines
In studying the topic of modern Greece, Class Saturn used a search engine to find information.
Search results can be selected and ranked because of their popularity. This means those at the top may be more useful as lots of people have used them.
However, search results may also be ranked because the website has paid the search engine money. This may mean that it is not the best website for us to use to find information. This is something we have to be careful about as it may not give us the information we need.
This means we have to check the reliability of a website. To do this, we looked at the information it included, the name of the website and whether it answered the question we were researching.
We used the information we found out to help us understand more about modern Greece.

Jupiter Letters To The Government About How Safe The Internet Is!
Friday 12th February 2016
In year 6 we have been writing letters to the government telling them how we could make the internet safer and child friendly. We did five paragraphs and the main three paragraphs were about what the online services, government and schools can do to project children online and stop bullying!
We also said that every month more and more children are being bullied online!
How can you stay safe online?
Here are some of our top tips:
- Don't follow anybody you don't know!
- Don't say yes to strange requests!
- Keep your posts on a private setting!
- Don't create an account if you are under the age limit- there is a reason for age limit!
- Make your password hard for people to crack- otherwise you could be hacked easily!

Safer Internet Day - What is needed to help make the internet a betterplace?
In class Saturn, we have used Google Docs to write letters to David Cameron.
We reflected on whether online services, schools and the government are doing enough to support us (young people) online.
By writing letters to our Prime Minister, we are attempting to improve our safety. Below are some of our initial thoughts.

By using Google Docs, we could share our work with Mr Lynch (who could help us when writing by sitting at his computer). After this, we shared our work collaboratively with another person in our class. This helped us to peer assess each other's work, adding and helping to improve.
Comment examples of your letters (you never know, Mr Cameron might see them).

Programming using HTML
We used HTML to create our own web pages about WWII. We used small codes to build it.
For example we did the heading, body, then images. We used codes such as <head>, <body>, <img scr = "image name.jpg">. We used codes that we had learnt earlier. When we looked at HTML first we didn't understand what the different codes meant, so previously we experimented with different letters. This made it easier for us to make the website.
We had trouble putting the picture up as it didn't work. This was because it was the wrong size. Therefore we had to resize it.
We didn't save the document as .html file, which meant it didn't open as a webpage. To fix this, we had to re save it as this.
We also wasn't sure where to write the codes, e.g. After or before <body>. So we tried it before, after, next to and below to work out which it would work with. It didn't work with before and after, so we used the others.

Making shelters
WALT- To understand what occurred during an air-raid and the Blitz.
Today, Jupiter class have been making Anderson shelters, we started with a normal box and we either covered it in tissue paper or painted it. We also painted some corrugated cardboard sliver and shaped it into a cylinder shape for our shelter.
Today, Jupiter class have been making Anderson shelters, we started with a normal box and we either covered it in tissue paper or painted it. We also painted some corrugated cardboard sliver and shaped it into a cylinder shape for our shelter.
We now will decorate it and make it look more like a garden by adding crops and flowers. Inside of the shelter we will add: beds, chairs and things they would've had back in World War 2 with some other homely features.
In the war they had different types of shelters, Morrison shelters, Anderson shelters and lots of people used underground tube stations for shelter because they would be more protected by it.
Before this, we did some role play, experiencing what someone in a shelter would experience in the war. We also wrote down feelings people would've experienced in a shelter such as: frightened and petrified.
We are all excited to continue making these projects and we look forward to learning more about World War 2
